GST/HST & bookkeeping / Reminder

Overdue Quarterly Bookkeeping and GST/HST Filing Reminder

If your quarter ended June 30, July 31 is the date to have your books closed, your GST/HST return filed, and any balance remitted. If that date has passed, there is still a clear way to catch up.

The deadline

Quarterly filers generally have one month after the end of their reporting period to file their GST/HST return and remit what they owe. For a quarter ending June 30, that means July 31. Your exact filing frequency and due date should always be confirmed in your CRA account.

01 / Close the quarter properly

Quarterly filers have more than one task

Before the return is filed, your bookkeeping should be brought up to date through the end of the reporting period. That means recording sales and expenses, reconciling the bank and credit cards, checking accounts receivable and payable, and gathering the invoices and receipts needed to support the numbers.

Then the GST/HST return needs to tell the same story as the books. Review tax collected on sales, eligible input tax credits, adjustments, and any balance owing or refund. If you have employees, remember that payroll and source deductions are separate obligations with their own deadlines.

Filing the return and paying the balance are connected but distinct. A return can be filed while payment is arranged, but the amount owing may continue to accrue interest until it is paid.

02 / Do not wait for a notice

Missing the date gets more expensive

When a GST/HST return is late and there is an amount owing, CRA may charge a late-filing penalty and interest. Interest on a balance owing is generally compounded daily at the prescribed rate, so waiting can make a small outstanding amount harder to clear. A late return can also make it more difficult to see whether the business has enough cash set aside for its next remittance.

The bigger risk is often the uncertainty. When the books are incomplete, it is easy to miss sales, claim an input tax credit without the right support, or carry an error into the next period. A clean catch-up gives you a defensible return and a better view of the cash your business actually has available.

If the deadline has passed, gather what you have and start the conversation. Filing a complete, accurate return is usually more useful than waiting until every record feels perfect.

03 / A practical reset

How Balbir.CA helps you catch up

Balbir.CA can help reconstruct the overdue quarter, reconcile the accounts, review the GST/HST treatment, and prepare the filing based on records that support the numbers. We will also identify what is missing, flag anything that needs a deeper tax review, and help you understand the amount that needs to be remitted.

Once the backlog is cleared, we can put a repeatable rhythm in place: quarterly close dates, document collection, reconciliations, review, filing, and cash-flow reminders. The goal is not simply to meet one deadline. It is to make the next deadline feel ordinary.
